A milliner just can't have too many blocks, and as you can see, there's a great selection here! James Cox, in the picture above, makes all these amazing shapes, and lots more besides. As well as being able to come to The Millinery Room to use them, you can either rent or buy blocks from his websites. For me, the difficulty is choosing...so many hat blocks, so little time...
I met James for the first time when I went for a workshop in The Millinery Room. It's always great to meet people who are enthusiastic about what they do, and James oozes enthusiasm for his work. As a complete beginner, I had lots of questions about blocks, and he took lots of time explaining how they are made, and what some of the more obscure blocks were for.
As for me, the first time I went, I really, really wanted to make a pillbox hat. And so I did; it's in the image, here. My first ever pillbox.
It's not the most sophisticated hat in the world, but it's mine... do you remember your first hat?
